Microbiological Analysis of Surfaces of Hospital Kitchen Equipment in Benin City, Nigeria

Hospital kitchen equipment are the materials used in the kitchen in carrying out food preparation effectively in hospitals. This study aimed to analyse the surfaces of some hospital kitchen equipment for microbial quality. Samples were collected before and after food preparation from surfaces of tables, sinks, gas cookers and freezer handle of three major hospital kitchens in Benin City, Nigeria. The samples were transported to the laboratory and subjected to standard microbiological analysis.

Water Quality Profile of Ekenwan River and Antibiotics Sensitivity Pattern of Its Isolated Bacteria

This study was aimed at evaluating the water quality profile of Ekenwan River located in Edo-South, Nigeria and also to determine the antibiotics sensitivity pattern of its isolated bacteria. Water samples were collected from upstream and downstream stations of the river and they were designated as station A and station B respectively; standard analytical and bacteriological procedures were adopted. The pH of water samples for station A ranged from 5.11-5.86 while and station B ranged from 4.11-5.94.

Production of Single Cell Protein with Three Agro-Shell Wastes Using Bacillus subtilis

In this study, Bacillus subtilis isolated from decaying pineapple fruit peel was identified by both phenotypic and molecular techniques and employed for the production of single cell protein from three agricultural wastes: melon, groundnut and walnut shells. Chemical analysis showed these agro-wastes to contain high amounts of carbohydrate which ranged from 61.26 - 65.12 %. Using submerged fermentation, maximum yield of cell biomass was produced from the groundnut shell followed by melon shell as substrate for fermentation.

Characterization of selected clinical isolates and antimicrobial properties of ethanol root extract of Anacardium occidentale L.

Ethanolic root extract of Anacardium occidentale L. was evaluated for antimicrobial activities against selected clinical isolates. Bacteria and fungi pathogens obtained from the laboratory unit of a functional health facility for this study included Escherichia coli, Kblesiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus vulgaris, Streptococcus sp., Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger. The identities of the bacteria spp. were re-established following standard physical and biochemical routines.

Antibiotic Resistance and Plasmid Profile of Bacterial Isolates from Pork Meat Retailed in Benin City

The use of antibiotics in animal husbandry has helped in the reduction of animal diseases. However, health workers as well as enlightened consumers are becoming more concerned with the health implications such as resistance associated with the use of antibiotics since the same group of antibiotics are used in human medicine.Sixty (60) samples from pork meat, piggery environment and abbatoir effluent were screened for the presence of bacteria by selective and differential cultural procedures. Susceptibility of isolates to antibiotics and plasmid
