In Nigeria, the continuous discharge of industrial wastewater with non-complaint quality parameters as stipulated by the National Environmental Standards and Regulation Enforcement Agency (NESREA) is a daunting challenge. This precarious situation has led to the continuous decline in our freshwater quality, with adverse environmental and health implications. Consequently, monitoring of wastewater discharged from industries is of utmost importance in order to check them and raise awareness, where necessary.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are a class of synthetic halogenated organic compounds used in a number of polymer-based commercial and home-use products. They are incoporated in the manufacture of electronics devices, furniture and textiles to increase resistance to flames and to meet set out fire safety standards. Generally, PBDEs are characterized by long range atmospheric transport, high bioaccumulation and toxicities. There is a dearth of information on the concentrations of PBDEs and the pattern of distribution at the various e-waste dump and dismantling sites in Nigeria.

Untreated and improperly treated industrial effluents endanger the aquatic fauna of the receiving water bodies, making the appropriate monitoring of the effluent discharges from industrial facilities of utmost importance. The potential ecological impact of the effluent from a glass manufacturing facility was investigated using the African catfish (Clarias gariepinus).
