Elucidation of the Physicochemical Characteristics and Health Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals in the Sediment of Ajoki River, Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area in Edo State, Nigeria

Sediments play a critical role in aquatic pollution studies, functioning both as sinks and potential secondary sources of contaminants. Over time, pollutants become embedded within sediment layers, serving as historical records of environmental pollution. This study assessed the physicochemical properties, pollutant levels and associated health risks in sediment from the Ajoki River, located in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area, Edo State, Nigeria. Samples were collected over a 12-month period, covering both the wet (May-October 2022) and dry (November 2022–April 2023) seasons.

Studies on the physicochemical properties and fatty acid composition of the oil from ripe plantain peel (Musa paradisiaca)

Oil extracted from ripe peel of Musa paradisiaca (plantain) was analyzed for physicochemical properties and fatty acid constituents using standard methods. The results revealed that the acid value, peroxide value and specific gravity were significantly (p<0.05) higher than those of soybean oil whereas saponification value, iodine value, ester value, boiling, smoke, flash and fire points were significantly lower than in soybean oil. The percentage yield of the oil from the peel of M. parasidiaca fruit was 6%.

Microbiological and Physicochemical Analyses of Pharmaceutical Raw Materials Used in Some Pharmaceutical Products

This study was carried out to investigate the microbiological and physicochemical characteristics of pharmaceutical raw materials used in some non-sterile preparations. A total of 16samples of pharmaceutical raw materials and 3 formulated non sterile preparations were subjected to microbial limit test, isolation and characterization of microbial contaminants and physicochemical analysis.
