Characterization of antibiogram susceptibility profile of Vibrio species isolated from fresh vegetables

Fresh vegetables water leaf (Talinum traingnlare), pumpkin leaf (Telfairia occidentalis) and scent leaf (Ocinum gratissimum) collected from urban markets in Benin City, Nigeria, were investigated for the presence of Vibrio species using standard microbiological techniques. The antibiotic susceptibility profiles of the isolates against a panel of 13 antibiotics, was carried out according to the method described by The National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCCLS).

Effect of Cadmium Pollution on the Germination and Growth of Phaseolus vulgaris L.

Phaseolus vulgaris L. seeds were grown in soil treated with different concentrations of cadmium to investigate its effect on germination and growth. The seeds were sown in three replicates of 5 kg soils treated with 25, 50, 75 and 100 mg/kg of cadmium and control. Toxicity effects increased with increasing concentration. Germination was significantly affected as data recorded for the various treatment showed great inhibition along the concentration gradient. Cadmium treated soil of 100 mg/kg caused death to experimental plants before 28 days.

Physiological Response of Human Epithelial Squamous Carcinoma (HEp-2) cells to a Di-Herbal Formulation

Senna alata and Senna podocarpa are medicinal plants widely used in complementary and alternative medicine in the treatment of various diseases, in southwestern Nigeria. The in vitro cytotoxic and genotoxic potential of a formulation composed of methanolic leaf extract of S. alata (75%) and S. podocarpa (25%), on Human Epithelial Squamous Carcinoma (HEp-2) cells was investigated.

Histopathological Evaluation of the Effects of Vitamin C on Cisplatin-induced testicular damage in Wistar albino Rats

Cisplatin is a very effective chemotherapeutic agent used in treating various types of cancer, but its application may have damaging effects on testicular morphology. In this study, the effect of vitamin C, a known antioxidant, on cisplatin-induced testicular damage was investigated. Thirty Wistar rats were grouped into six groups (A-F) of five rats per group. Cisplatin was given as a single dose of 8 mg/kg body weight 24 hours prior to daily vitamin C administration at l00 mg and 200 mg respectively, for two weeks in 2 ml distilled water by gastric gavage.

Physicochemical analysis of automobile waste oil on soil quality in Benin City, Nigeria

Sustainable use of soil on which agriculture depends is absolutely necessary for agricultural productivity. Soil samples were collected from two auto-mechanic workshops sited at Technical College Road (Station A) and Textile Mill Road (Station B) while the control was at EDPA Housing Estate, all in Benin City with the aid of a split soil core sampler at a depth of 0  10cm. The Physicochemical parameters of the samples were analysed using standard methods and revealed pH mean value of 7.27 at station A and 6.83 at station B respectively.

Hypoglycemic, Hematologic and Hypolipidemic Potential of Hippophae rhamnoides (Berry Oil) in Alloxan-induced Diabetic Rats

This study was carried out to evaluate the hypoglycemic, hematologic and hypolipidemic potential of berry oil in alloxan-induced adult Wistar rat. Five groups of Wistar rats (4 rats per group) Group 1 served as “Normal control” rats and received normal rat pellets and water. Diabetes mellitus was induced in Groups 2, 3, 4, and 5 by intraperitoneal injection of alloxan (160 mg/kg). Group 3 rats were treated with glibenclamide (5 mg/kg body weight), groups 4 and 5 received 500 mg/kg and 1000 mg/kg body weight of Berry oil daily respectively for 21 days via oral gavage.

Effect of Poultry Manure on Growth, Nutrients Composition and Heavy Metal Content of Amaranthus caudatus L.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of poultry manure on the growth of Amaranthus caudatus with a view to establishing the optimum poultry manure treatment for its growth. The study was carried out between the months of February and May 2020, in a portion beside the botanical garden in the University of Benin, consisted of three (03) treatments namely PM1 (10%), PM2 (20 %), and PM3 (30 %) with poultry manure and control (PM0) in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) and replicated three times.

Growth Response of Abelmoscus esculentus (L.) Monench Planted in Lead Contaminated Soil.

This study was carried out in the undergraduate project plot of the department of Plant Biology and Biotechnology, University of Benin from March to July 2020, to determine the impact of lead contamination on okra plant. A field experiment was conducted using 4 levels of Pb pollution namely 25, 50, 75, 100 mg/kg and control. Each bag containing 5 kg of air dried sandy loam soil was arranged in a completely randomized design (CRD) with three replicates. Five (05) seeds were sown in each bag. All bags were watered regularly. Plants were thinned down to one per bag after a week of emergence.

Phytochemical Screening and GCMS Profile of Bioactive Natural Products in Ethanolic Root Extract of Uvaria ovate

Phytochemical and gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GCMS) analysis of the ethanolic extract of Uvaria ovata (Uo) roots was carried out. Phytochemical analysis showed high amounts of alkaloids, tannins and flavonoids, moderate amounts of saponins, terpenes and cardiac glycosides, while steroids and phenols were found in little quantities. Gas chromatography and mass spectrometry analysis revealed the presence of eleven compounds, of which D-Streptamine and Cystine were prominent.

Ethnobotanical Plants Used for Oral Pathogens among Esan Tribe in Esan West Local Government of Edo State

Therapeutic plants have kept on drawing in consideration worldwide in the quest for powerful antimicrobial drugs that can battle resistant pathogens that have rendered numerous conventional medications out of date in the treatment of diseases. As such this study was carried out to evaluate the ethnobotanical survey of medicinal plants used for oral pathogens among Esan tribe in Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State. A total of four medicinal plants were collected and identified as follows: Harungana madagascariensis, Jatropha curcas, Aframomum melegueta and Plumbago zeylanica.
