Antidyslipidemic Potential of Aqueous Extract of Petiveria Alliaceae Leaf on Fructose-Induced Metabolic Syndrome in Rats

This study investigated the antidyslipidemic activities of the aqueous extract of Petiveria alliaceae leaves against high fructose-induced metabolic syndrome in male wistar rats. Forty-five male Wistar rats were randomized into two groups of control (n =15) and high fructose diet (n = 30) , each group received water and control diet and fructose enriched diet and water ad- libitum respectively for six weeks to induce metabolic syndrome. Twenty (24) h after six weeks of feeding the rats with high fructose diet (HFD), metabolic syndrome was confirmed in five rats each from both groups, and rats regrouped into 7 groups (A-G) of 5 rats each. Some biochemical parameters were assessed after 3-weeks of oral administration of aqueous P. alliaceae extract and metformin drug as control drug, all at various doses and instances. The data generated were subjected to analysis of variance, followed by Turkey-Kramer test to separate the means at (p<0.05). The 6-weeks consumption of high fructose diet resulted into HFD-induced metabolic syndrome in rats. 3 weeks of oral administration of aqueous P. alliaceae extract had the 400 mg as the most active which significantly (p<0.05) altered the HFD-mediated increase in HMG-CoA reductase, lipid profile, low density lipoprotein, total cholesterol, triglycerides, and the cardiac coronary and atherogenic indices and decrease in high density lipoprotein (HDL) observed in the rats. This study concluded that P. alliaceae leaves aqueous extract may possess some therapeutic potential and may be considered as a template for the development of drugs in the management dyslipidemia in metabolic syndrome.
